Maize

MAIZE

Maize was introduced into Africa in the 1500s and has since become the most important cereal crop throughout the Continent.

Maize is grown widely throughout Africa and in fact more maize is produced annually than any other grain.
It is rich in dietary fibre and calories which are a great source of energy.
Maize is also the staple diet in most African countries.

Droughts have a big influence in supply, therefore maize commodity trading is vitally important in African countries.
In industrialized countries, maize is largely used as livestock feed and as a raw material for industrial products.

Maize accounts for 30−50% of low-income household expenditures in Eastern and Southern Africa.
